Pedagogy of Science

 Pedagogy of Science

Scientific Knowledge is Tentative

Observations and Inferences- focus natural environment to teach concepts

3 domains of science:

1. Body of Knowledge

-Facts, Definitions, Concepts, Theories, Laws

- tentative, influenced by social and historical background, objective of Science is to provide explanation of natural phenomena

-provide real experience, generalize themselves

2. Process of Enquiry

-Observing, Measuring, Estimating, Inferring, Classifying, Hypothesizing, Experimenting, Concluding

-scientific investigations, establish causal relationships and distinguish them from mere associations.

3. Way of thinking

-Based upon evidences, Creative, Influenced by background knowledge

-learners able to explore, analyze, evaluate and work in a scientific manner

Inquiry learning- finding an answer of a question in mind using various resources from surroundings to access information, data, knowledge and idea. Promotes knowledge formation and its generation

1. Constructing explanations and ideas

2. Asking questions and using appropriate questioning technique

- 2 types of questions: Existence (why- recall facts), Casual (how- investigation)

- questions asked: Testable (become hypothesis), Spontaneous (reflect on curiosity). stimulative (by teacher), Factual

- find answers themselves, help modify factual into testable questions, generate new questions

3. Developing testable questions and hypotheses

-connects to scientific concepts rather than to opinions, feelings, or beliefs

-hypothesis:  tentative or testable answers to the testable questions, consistent with observation, as a statement of the predicted outcome not as a question, formulated before the experiment, be specific and testable

4. Planning, conducting and observing simple investigations
